DesktopProof: Architecture
Secure Desktop Launcher
C#/WPF launcher with RSA-signed patching, delta updates, and self-update capability.
The Challenge
Users needed a reliable way to keep client software up-to-date with verified, tamper-proof patches.
Constraints
- Patches must be cryptographically verified before application
- Delta updates to minimize download size
- The launcher itself must be self-updatable
Technical Decisions
- RSA signatures for patch verification -- tamper detection without trusting the transport layer
- Delta patching to reduce bandwidth (only download changed bytes)
- WPF for the UI -- mature, good Windows integration, hardware-accelerated rendering
Highlights
- RSA-signed patch verification preventing tampered updates
- Delta update system minimizing download sizes
- Self-update capability for the launcher itself
- Progress tracking and rollback on failed updates
- Multi-server CDN-friendly distribution
Results
- Zero reported cases of corrupted or tampered updates
- Reduced patch download sizes significantly through delta updates
